It is fun to propagate plants. Sometimes it is the only way to get new plants. Also get new plants at almost no cost. Here are a few tips on the best way to go about it. There are normally two ways to propagate jasmine: by taking cuttings, or by layering.
Cuttings:Jasmines can be propagated from 3 inch long tip cutting taken in early spring. Dip these in hormone rooting powder and plant them in small pots of moistened peat based potting mixture suitable for lime-hating plants. Place the potted in a heated propagating case or enclose them in plastic bags and keep them at a temperature of 60 - 65 degree Fahrenheit in bright light filtered through a translucent blind or curtain. Rooting should occur in 4 - 6 weeks. Later move the rooted cuttings into pots a size larger containing the potting mixture recommended for jasmine plants. Water them moderately and feed them atleast once a month until they are well developed. Then treat them as mature plants. |

Layering:Layering is also a good idea for the plants like jasmine. Bend over a piece of stem and stick it in the soil next to the parent plant. Fix the stem into the soil then cover it with soil. The stem will eventually strike root and can then be cut away from the parent plant. This method is used for climbing and hanging plants too. |
