Jasmine is called the gift from God (yasmin in Persian). There are 200 species in its Oleaceae family.

We will focus specifically on the Jasminium sambac species, native to southern Asia, India, Philippines, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, and also in the island of Hawaii. It is widely grown throughout the tropics as an ornamental plant for its strongly scented flowers. It is the national flower of the Philippines & Indonesia. In South India, jasmines are strung into thick strands and worn as a hair adornment. It is also used in cosmetics and perfumery, and as a calmative (relaxing properties, sedative) and aphrodisiac (intensifies romantic desire).

It is an evergreen vine or shrub reaching up to 1-3 m tall. The leaves are opposite or in whorls of three, simple (not pinnate, like most other jasmines), ovate, 4 - 12.5 cm long and 2 - 7.5 cm broad. The flowers are produced in clusters of 3 - 12 together, strongly scented, with a white corolla 2-3 cm diameter with 5 - 9 lobes. Flowering in Jasmines takes place in summer or spring, usually six months after planting. The flowers open at night. The Jasmine flower releases its fragrance at night after the sun has set and especially when the moon is waxing towards fullness. Jasmine flower buds are more fragrant than the flowers.
